Cousins Story 15

One time when we were a little older, all three of our families were at Spring Lake.  It was back in the days when all the water activity took place in the East Lake because the West Lake was thought to have underwater eddies that could drown you.  We all had bathing suits of sorts by now including Aunt Elsie and Aunt Nettie.  They took us into the water and we played an interesting water game.  We formed a circle by holding hands.  Then we took turns giving and having a "water ride".  The aunts showed us how to do it.  The two people on either side of you would grip your hands very tightly, you would let your feet float and they would swish you through the water and over a pair of linked hands on the other side of the circle.  You would put your feet down and join the circle at that point.  The two people who swished you joined their hands and went back to their place.  None of us could swim, but this game was lots of fun for us.  What the occasion was, I no longer remember.  It might have been a Kinderfest (children's day), though I don't think so.  I would have been 10 or 11 at this time.

Cousins Story 4

Laura is 11 year younger than Margareta and 12 years younger than Rudy. ------------ Laura was a sunny, happy child with a vivid imagination and the ability to tell her imaginative adventures in a delightful way.  One day Rudolf overheard her telling me one of those wildly imaginative tales.  He shook his finger at her, and in all seriousness said, "Laura! You know that isn't true; Laura, you mustn't lie!".  She might have been four or five at the time.  Rudolph's admonition always bothered me.  Both Laura and I knew that her story was from her imagination and hadn't really happened.  If both of us knew that, was it still a lie?

Cousins Story 13

Almost every fall, when we were small, Grandma and Grandpa Dyck and Aunt Frieda would arrive for a visit.  Aunt Frieda later married Grandpa's son, Henry and after that he came too.  I was always happy when they came, even though they never stayed with us because of our small house.  Grandpa Dyck invariably brought a whole carton of Jersey Milk chocolate bars to hand out to all of us grandkids.  Because chocolate bars were scarce at our homes, these were a special treat.  I don't know what the other kids did, but I would eat only 2 squares a day so mine would last me a week or more (A Jersey milk bar weight 4 oz in those days).  Several times I remember Grandpa giving me a second bar too.
